Volunteering: Make a difference in the lives of people who need it most

Volunteers are an integral part of the work done by the American Red Cross of Eastern Massachusetts. The Red Cross has both ongoing and one-time projects for individuals and groups of volunteers of all ages. Volunteers do not require prior training or experience in either disaster response or health and safety-related fields – any necessary training can be provided by the Red Cross. The following are just a few of the many ways in which you can serve as a Red Cross volunteer:

Administration: Data entry, filing and sorting, reception and direction of Red Cross visitors, answering multiple phone lines, preparing Chapter mailings.

Communications and Marketing: Development and writing of human interest stories for media and Red Cross newsletter, social media, and generating marketing opportunities.

Emergency Services (includes Disaster Services, Service to the Armed Forces and Valley Wide Help): Disaster response, disaster and preparedness training instruction and presentations, driving vehicles to disaster scenes, data entry, administrative services, clerical support, information and referral support.

Preparedness and Training: Instruction/training in CPR/First Aid and other health-related issues, monitor and promote safety programs for senior citizens, deliver basic health and First Aid presentations to elementary school students, moderate tests for nursing skills certification. Development and Community Affairs: Coordination and implementation of plans for fund-raising events, follow-up with donor organizations, individuals and volunteers, grant
research and writing.

Facilities: Cleaning and maintenance of building and surrounding property, participate in construction/tenant relocation projects as needed.

Ready When the Time Comes:  The Ready When the Time Comes program trains employees of participating companies and organizations as Red Cross disaster volunteers to serve in an emergency.

The Red Cross offers both credit and non-credit internship opportunities for college students. Internship experiences can be tailored to meet the needs and experiences of the student.

The Human Resources Department strives to match every volunteer with the position that best suits the individual’s skills and interests. If you do not find anything of interest on this site, you may also visit volunteermatch.org, BostonCares.org, or Idealist.org to find other opportunities to serve.
