American Red Cross seeking disaster volunteers in Nantucket

The Cape Cod and Islands Chapter of the American Red Cross is looking for volunteers to assist in the case of disaster on Nantucket. Especially needed are licensed mental health professionals. A weekend of training is being planned for June 15-17.

  • Prospective volunteers are invited to attend a class on Friday, June 15 (6 to 9:30 p.m.) that will provide an overview of Red Cross Disaster Services and will detail the variety of roles open to volunteers.
  • On Saturday, June 16, a course entitled Psychological First Aid will be offered. This course investigates the emotional trauma that accompanies a disaster and offers ways to support emotional recovery. This course is open to all Red Cross volunteers, both new and experienced. The course will run from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • On Saturday, June 16, from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Foundations of Disaster Mental Health will be offered. This course is for licensed mental health professionals who want to make themselves available during a disaster to help in the recovery process. Disaster Services Overview and Psychological First Aid are prerequisites.
  • On Sunday, June 17, an all day course (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) will be offered to volunteers interested in Client Casework. This offering will detail the ways in which the Red Cross assists individual clients in the recovery process after a disaster. All current Red Cross volunteers, as well as new volunteers, are encouraged to take this course.

All courses will be held at the Nantucket Police Station, 4 Fairgrounds Rd. in Nantucket.
