Donate Blood: A small sacrifice that can save lives

Blood – the essence of life – cannot be synthesized or manufactured and every drop of it is acquired through donations.  There is no substitute for blood.  Every year a total of 30 million blood components are transfused in the U.S.  Donating one pint of blood is enough to save three individuals.

Here at the American Red Cross, we started collecting blood in 1940 and now supply approximately 40 percent of the United State’s blood to nearly 3,000 hospitals across the nation.  Despite this great number, blood is still in high demand and every donation is very valuable.

The donation process is composed of four easy steps; registration, medical history and mini-physical, donation and refreshments.  The process is completely safe and a sterile needle is always used then disposed after each donor. The actual blood donation typically takes less than 10-12 minutes. The entire process, from the time you arrive to the time you leave, takes about an hour and 15 min.
