Enjoy the Fireworks, Don’t Be One!

We urge everyone to enjoy the festivities but make sure to follow a few safety tips.

Independence Day is right around the corner which means grilling, swimming, and most of all – fireworks.  We here at the American Red Cross want you to get the most out of your holiday and avoid possible injuries or accidents by following a few safety tips.

Sun/Heat Tips

Whether at the beach or someone’s backyard make sure to be careful of the sun

  • Wear proper sunscreen. Sitting in the shade for periods of time can save your skin and avoid painful sun burns
  • Make sure that everyone drinks water, especially if alcohol is being consumed.

Beach and Swimming Tips

A great way to stay cool this Fourth of July is to go swimming at the beach or in a pool.  Use caution while swimming and follow these tips to make sure everyone is safe and sound while they’re splashing around!

  • Swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards and always swim with a buddy – even if there is a lifeguard on duty.
  • Always enter shallow water feet first. Dive only in areas marked safe for diving.
  • When at the beach remember to stay alert for Rip Current.

Fireworks Safety

Though illegal to buy, sell, or possess fireworks in Massachusetts, many people enjoy the annual (supervised) displays put on by many cities and towns.

  • Stay at least 500 feet away from professional fireworks displays.
  • Leave any area immediately where untrained amateurs are using fireworks.

Have a great Fourth of July!
