When the weather outside if frightful…

…Staying in is so delightful.

The snow hasn’t started piling down on us yet, but you know what happens when it does: roads get slippery, drivers get nervous and everyone wishes they had just stayed home.

But it’s not quite that simple. Staying home requires some preparation, too:

Stock up on flashlights. Avoid candles when you can.

  • Inspect that fireplace or wood stove. Use a fire screen for fires, and burn only wood.
  • Got a generator? Luck you! Make sure it’s hooked up to the power supply and not directly to your home wiring.
  • Warm up those pipes. Letting water trickle through the pipes can prevent them from freezing.
  • Don’t overload outlets. Surge protector, people.
  • Bring the pets in.
  • Don’t use a stove or oven to heat your home. It’s just silly. If you’re going to use a space heater, make sure you follow the directions. Keep kids, pets and wet clothes away from it.
