A look back: Red Cross aids responders in sticky situation

molassesdisasterNinety-four years ago today, a large tank of molasses exploded and flooded Boston’s North End – killing 21 and injuring more than 100 others.

As first responders worked through the sticky mess, volunteers from the American Red Cross Motor Corp waded through the molasses to aid them.

According to this write-up, every one of the chapter’s ten motor ambulances responded to the scene within 45 minutes. There, they transported injured people, and transported hospital supplies and refreshments. The volunteers – all women – were dressed in knee-high boots, a unique uniform which helped them get through the thick goo.
