Oklahoma tornado devastation: How you can help

With the recent news of the devastating tornado that tore through the suburbs of Oklahoma City, many people throughout the country want to know how they can help.  Therefore, it is important to know what is needed and when it is needed in order to best serve the victims of this disaster.

  • You can help people affected by disasters like tornadoes, floods and other crises by making a donation to American Red Cross Disaster Relief by visiting www.redcross.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or texting the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation. Your donation helps provide food, shelter and emotional support to those affected by disasters.
  • At the moment, the American Red Cross has enough trained disaster workers aiding the tornado victims in Oklahoma.  But you can contact your local Red Cross chapter to get trained so you can help in the future.
  • We only accept large, bulk donations of new supplies that meet the needs of the specific disaster.  Unfortunately we cannot accept small amounts of new or used goods, as it takes time and money to sort through and distribute items, while financial contributions can be accessed quickly and will be used to acquire the most necessary items.
  • Small financial donations go further than you might think.  For example, $2 provides a snack to a child who just lost his or her home, and $10 can provide a hot meal to that same child.  Every financial donation, no matter the amount, will help and bring hope to a victim.
  • The Red Cross stands ready to help meet the blood needs of patients in and around Oklahoma City if needed. There is currently enough blood to meet patient demands; however, those with type O negative blood are encouraged to give blood when they are able.
