Hurricane Safety Review

With peak hurricane season approaching this month and heightening in early to mid September, it is important refresh our knowledge and revisit some important hurricane safety tips.  In the event of a hurricane the Red Cross wants you and your loved ones to be safe.  To ensure you are prepared, the following are important guidelines from the Red Cross to keep you, your family, and your home protected during a harmful hurricane.

Safety Tips:

  • Listen closely to a radio tuned to Weather radio
  • Evacuate to a safe location when instructed by officials
  • Notify and warn local neighbors and family members about the hurricane
  • Turn refrigerator to its coldest setting and keep it closed
  • Turn off propane tanks and unplug small appliances
  • Lock and board up your windows
  • Fill your bathtub and other large containers with water for sanitary purposes
  • Stay in a small interior room or closet, ideally without windows

Emergency Preparation Equipment:

  • 3 day supply of water
  • Non perishable food
  • Change of clothing and shoes/boots
  • Prescription medicine
  • Blankets or sleeping bags
  • First aid kit
  • Emergency tools
  • Batteries and radio
  • Emergency generator
  • Extra cash, credit cards
  • Flashlights and spotlights
  • Special items for infants, young children, elderly or disabled family members
